    Sealing Face

    Although the plain flange has a flat - plate - like appearance, its sealing face can be of different types. The two common types are the raised face (RF) and the flat face (FF). Among them, the raised face plain flange is more popular in regular industry systems as it provides a better sealing effect under normal operating conditions.​

    Connection with Pipes​

    The inner hole of the plain flange is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the pipe it is to be connected with. To secure the flange to the pipe, a fillet weld is applied at both the bottom and the top of the flange where it meets the pipe. However, due to the use of fillet weld, the plain flange is not recommended for high - pressure applications. In fuel and water pipelines, it is common to bolt two plain flanges together with a gasket placed between them to ensure a good seal.​

    Standards and Dimensions​

    In the ANSI/ASME B16.5 flange standard, there is no specific plate slip on flange. However, in many practical projects, the ANSI B16.5 plate flange is widely used to reduce project costs. The ANSI/ASME B16.5 plain flange has the same dimensions and pitch circle diameters (PCDs) as the slip on flange, with the only difference being the absence of a hub. The available size range of plain flanges is usually from 1/2" to 60".​
